The time Derek was born (literally), he was always 'in the water', so to speak. When the water temperature got a little hot, he would say it wasn't always his fault. Anyway, his mother was a championship swimmer and instructor. So Derek didn't have much say in the matter when he was thrown in the pool before he could even walk. That early exposure to H2O has served him well over the years, as he is as comfortable on a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean as he is on Terra firma. Derek began messing around in boats in High School when he would (with permission of course) take the family's ski boat out for a spin with his buddies on Lake Piru in Southern California. Years later, after a short stint in college studying music and working as a Sound Recording Engineer for A&M Records in Hollywood, Derek took a beginning sailing class and was hopelessly hooked. Derek has owned several sailboats, starting with a Columbia 22' which he sailed to Mexico from Los Angeles, a Mariner '31 ketch which he sailed to Seattle from Los Angeles, and S/V Far Niente, a Westsail '42, which has been all over the Pacific Northwest. He acquired his U.S. Coast Guard Captains license and became a 'Duck Boat' Captain for 'Ride The Ducks' of Seattle.
