It traces its origins to the ancient settlement of Rhizon, the oldest settlement in the Bay of Kotor. Lying in the innermost portion of the bay, the settlement was protected from the interior by inaccessible limestone cliffs of the Orjen mountain, the highest range of eastern Adriatic, and through several following narrow straits in the Bay of Kotor from the open sea. Risan is a tourist destination that has a hotel called after its most famous citizen, Queen Teuta, with accompanying fine beaches.Risan is famous by its Roman Mosaics and best preserved roman god Hypnos. Herceg Novi A few years ago the tourist brochures stated that Herceg Novi was “a stone picture and a master piece of civilization, but it is also a marvelous botanic garden”. It has existed for seven centuries. Its dense Mediterranean greenery, unusual scenery is mostly the result of generations of seamen bringing and planting the seeds of palms, oleanders, eucalyptus, agaves, cactuses, bamboos, magnolias, and the other exotic plants. This town of “the eternal greenery, sun and promenades” was described by the Nobel Prize recipient Ivo Andric, who like many other writers, "spent the autumn of his life” in Herceg Novi. Blue Cave It is one of the most attractive in the series of caves located on the Luštica Peninsula and is situated between the of Zlatna luka Cove and the Mokra gora Cape. It is 5.7 nautical miles away from Herceg Novi. It has two openings at 45 degrees angles; the height from the sea level to the top of the ceiling is 9 m, and the depth is 3-4 m. Its name comes from the unusual blue color during the sunny days, due to sun rays reflecting off of the surface of the sea. It is a must see as a part of one’s tour around the Bay of Kotor. Mamula island It is known on the sea maps as the Lastavica Island. It acquired its widely accepted name “Mamula” after the Austrian general Lazar Mamula who fortified it in the mid 19th century. It is covered with low vegetation, it has a beach and a dock on its Northern side. During the both World Wars, there was a prison on the island and nowadays there is a commemorative inscription reminiscent of that period.
